Symptoms of Aspergers Syndrome


Inflexibility

Attachment to routines, often cause disturbances if changed. Someone with Aspergers usually prefers routines and can experience emotional upset if routines are altered

Difficulty engaging in conversation

Talking about a subject obsessively,as well as, a lack of eye-contact during the conversation are big tell tale signs of AS.
Often people with Aspergers can have difficulty engaging in conversation as well as keeping eye contact with the person they are talking to. Often the conversation revolves around talking about a subject the Aspie is extremely interested in, while at the same time being unaware of the social expressions of the person being spoken to. This can result in unawareness about whether the other is interested in the topic.

Lack of social skills

Often a person with Aspergers has difficulties in developing and keeping close friendships, having meaningful or deep conversations, as well as, a tendency to isolate.

Limited emotional awareness and irrational emotions

It is common for people with AS to have a very low sensitivity to the emotions of others. They have difficulty understanding both their own emotions and the emotions of others. That being said, it can also be common for extreme emotions to be expressed with (what a Neuro Typical individual would consider to be a ) very minor trigger.

Repetitive rituals and behaviors (Stimming)

This can be observed in the engagement of repetitive rituals such as body movements, habits and behaviors. Examples of this include hand flapping, twirling, rocking or obscure methods of play.

Impaired Motor skills

Sometimes one can experience an impairment of motor skills such as playing catch, riding a bike, tying shoelaces. Although not exclusive to AS this can often be an effect of the disorder.
